Year Two of our Desert Garden Project

In 2022, we planted over 100 trees, grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and seedlings across a 10-acre plot of desert land. Here’s how it went, and what we plan to do next. — Part 12 in our For Every Star, A Tree publication. In the desert, you can smell the rain before it comes. We’ve been blessed with two weeks of intermittent rain here in California. In two days, we were able to capture 1,000 gallons of rainwater.

We’re growing a forest in the desert.

Since 2021, we’ve been planting trees in the desert. You’re welcome to join us. — If you’re reading this, you probably get it. You’re burnt out from all the climate news. Or numb from yet another “hottest day on record.” How there’s nothing we can do to stop the world from overheating. How in 50 years, entire swaths of the globe will be uninhabitable. You’re…

The Pecking Order

There’s a pecking order, and I often forget that I’m part of it. — Today I picked up two bantam (“small”) Serama roosters. Unlike Arjuna the Duck, these brothers are very familiar with humans and have displayed zero fear at my presence. Chikki and Rikki — I’ve named them after a variation in my favorite children’s show, Cañticos — were gifted to us by…

A Broken Phone.

It took a while, but my phone finally collapsed after I dropped it for the last time, yesterday. You’d think they’d make pockets that shape the contours of these devices, ensuring no accidental breaks. …

I asked ChatGPT to help us Green The Desert. It wrote us a 2-year Permaculture Plan.

A 180+ page ebook I compiled to help desert homesteaders begin their regenerative agriculture journey. — AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming more mainstream everyday. I’ve been curious about ChatGPT, a language model. It essentially learns patterns about word choices and mirrors back text based upon the…

Olive the Olive Fruit Trees

Last week, we noticed actual olives growing from our newly planted olive tree. — Part 11 in the Flow the Desert project. Exciting times! Our olive trees have started to bear fruit. They were one of the first fruit trees we planted on the property, specifically chosen for a few reasons: They are hearty fruit trees that adapt well to arid environments Olive trees…

Manifesting a Desert Oasis in the Digital Realm

Utilizing Midjourney to manipulate photo-realistic AI paintings and imagery. — Part 10 in our For Every Star, A Tree publication. Having been out of the developer game for most of this year, I’m shocked at how much AI bots and generators have improved in such a short amount of time. Midjourney is a new bot — at least, new to…

The Tale of Two Skoolies

Five lessons learned from my first week of hosting an off-grid, remote bus in the desert. — Part 9 in the Flow the Desert project. It was the best of stays, it was the worst of stays. Please excuse me for being too on the nose with these references. I am running on a severe lack of sleep and my very first attempt at french pressed coffee. …

Millennials Are Giving Up On Marriages and 9-to-5 Jobs for THIS Reason

Don’t believe the hype — it’s not about freedom or commitment issues. The truth is actually a lot simpler than that. I came across an article by a man who has been married for 5 years and has been tied down to his job for 10 years. …
